Which Oxford college employed J.R.R. Tolkien when he wrote The Hobbit?
Answer
Pembroke College
Answer
Pembroke College
Pembroke College employed J.R.R. Tolkien when he wrote The Hobbit.
Tolkien was a fellow and tutor at Pembroke College, Oxford, from 1925 until 1945. During this period he developed The Hobbit and wrote much of the early material that later contributed to The Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit was published in 1937 while he was still associated with Pembroke.
Tolkien later moved to Merton College, where he became Merton Professor of English Language and Literature. That later connection is a common source of confusion when people identify his Oxford college. Pembroke remains especially associated with the composition of The Hobbit and with Tolkien’s academic work during the years when his private mythology expanded into published fiction.
