Which Oxford college employed J.R.R. Tolkien when he began teaching there in 1925?

The story behind the answer

Pembroke College employed J.R.R. Tolkien when he began teaching at Oxford in 1925.

Tolkien became Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon in 1925 and was associated with Pembroke College during that period. He taught Old and Middle English and continued developing the languages and stories that formed the foundation of his legendarium.

During his years at Pembroke, Tolkien wrote or developed important works including The Hobbit and much of The Lord of the Rings. His academic responsibilities and creative writing existed side by side, although his fiction was not initially the main reason for his reputation among colleagues.

Tolkien later moved to Merton College when he became Merton Professor of English Language and Literature in 1945. Because Merton is strongly linked with his later Oxford career, it is a plausible but incorrect answer to a question about where he began teaching.
