Which Oxford college employed C.S. Lewis before his move to Cambridge?
Answer
Magdalen College
Answer
Magdalen College
Magdalen College employed C.S. Lewis before his move to Cambridge. He became a fellow and tutor of Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1925 and remained there until 1954.
At Magdalen, Lewis taught English literature and developed the scholarly and social networks that supported his writing. His Oxford years included the formation of the Inklings, an informal literary group whose members included J.R.R. Tolkien and Charles Williams. Many of Lewis’s major works, including The Problem of Pain and The Allegory of Love, emerged during this period.
In 1954, Lewis left Oxford for Cambridge after being appointed the first holder of the newly established Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Magdalen College, Oxford, and Magdalene College, Cambridge, have similar names but are separate institutions.
