Which Oxford college employed C.S. Lewis as a fellow and tutor for nearly three decades?
Answer
Magdalen College
Answer
Magdalen College
Magdalen College employed C.S. Lewis as a fellow and tutor for nearly three decades.
Lewis was elected to a fellowship and teaching position at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1925. He remained there until 1954, teaching English and conducting tutorials. The college’s medieval buildings, riverside walks, and academic community formed the setting for much of his Oxford life.
At Magdalen, Lewis became part of a lively circle that included scholars and writers. His friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien developed through Oxford academic and literary groups, especially the Inklings, whose members met to read and discuss works in progress.
Lewis’s Oxford college should not be confused with Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he became a professor in 1954. The names are historically related but refer to different institutions in different cities. His long Oxford appointment was at Magdalen College, spelled without the final “e.”
