Which Oxford college elected C.S. Lewis as a fellow in 1925?
Answer
Magdalen College
Answer
Magdalen College
Magdalen College elected C.S. Lewis as a fellow of Oxford University in 1925.
Lewis became a Fellow and Tutor in English at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he taught for nearly three decades. His Oxford appointment followed his service in the First World War, his studies at University College, Oxford, and a period in which he achieved unusually strong results across several subjects.
Magdalen was central to Lewis’s intellectual and social life. He lived and worked there while developing his scholarship on medieval and Renaissance literature and while writing imaginative and religious works. His regular conversations with fellow academics helped shape the informal literary circle later known as the Inklings.
Lewis left Oxford for Cambridge in 1954, when he became the first holder of the newly established Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Magdalene College, Cambridge. This is distinct from Magdalen College in Oxford: the names are similar, but they refer to colleges at different universities.
