Which Oxford college did C.S. Lewis teach at before moving to Cambridge?
Answer
Magdalen College
Answer
Magdalen College
C.S. Lewis taught at Magdalen College, Oxford, before moving to Cambridge.
Lewis became a fellow and tutor in English at Magdalen College in 1925. He remained there for nearly three decades, teaching generations of students and developing the scholarly and literary reputation that supported his later public writing.
Magdalen is one of Oxford’s constituent colleges and was founded in the fifteenth century. Its grounds, buildings, and deer park became part of Lewis’s daily environment during the years in which he wrote major works of literary criticism, fiction, and Christian apologetics.
In 1954, Lewis was appointed to the newly created Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Magdalene College, Cambridge. The similar names can cause mistakes: Magdalen in Oxford is spelled without a final “e,” while Magdalene in Cambridge includes one. The Oxford college, not the Cambridge institution, was his earlier teaching post.
