Which Oxford college did C.S. Lewis attend as an undergraduate?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis attended University College, Oxford, as an undergraduate.

Lewis entered Oxford in 1917 after receiving private tutoring and studying with William T. Kirkpatrick. His university education was interrupted by military service during the First World War, but he returned to Oxford after being wounded and later completed his studies.

University College is one of Oxford’s oldest colleges, founded in the thirteenth century. Lewis studied classics, philosophy, and English there, building the broad literary and intellectual foundation that later shaped his fiction, apologetics, and academic work.

This college is often confused with Magdalen College, where Lewis later held an Oxford teaching fellowship from 1925. Magdalen was his workplace, not the college where he was an undergraduate. He eventually became associated with both institutions, but they represent different stages of his Oxford career.
