Which Oxford college appointed C.S. Lewis to its faculty in 1925?
Answer
Magdalen College
Answer
Magdalen College
Magdalen College appointed C.S. Lewis to its faculty in 1925.
Lewis became a Fellow and tutor in English at Magdalen College, Oxford, beginning an academic association that lasted for nearly three decades. He taught English literature there from 1925 until 1954, while also writing fiction, literary criticism, and religious works.
Magdalen was an important setting in Lewis’s professional and social life. He formed friendships with other scholars and writers, including J.R.R. Tolkien, and participated in the informal literary group known as the Inklings. The group met mainly at Oxford locations, including the Eagle and Child pub.
In 1954, Lewis left Oxford for Cambridge University, where he became the first holder of the newly established chair of Medieval and Renaissance English. Magdalen College is therefore associated with the main Oxford phase of his career, while Cambridge became the setting for his final academic appointment.
