Which Oxford club did J.R.R. Tolkien help found with C.S. Lewis?
Answer
The Inklings
Answer
The Inklings
J.R.R. Tolkien helped establish the Oxford literary group called The Inklings with C.S. Lewis.
The Inklings were an informal discussion and reading group associated with the University of Oxford. Members met mainly during the 1930s and 1940s, often at the Eagle and Child pub, known to them as the Bird and Baby, or in rooms at Oxford colleges. They read works in progress aloud and discussed literature, Christianity, and ideas about storytelling.
C.S. Lewis became one of Tolkien’s closest intellectual friends, although their relationship later became complicated. The group was not a formal university society with a fixed membership list. It included writers and academics such as Charles Williams and Owen Barfield. The Inklings therefore should not be confused with a political organization or with the Bloomsbury Group, another British literary circle from a different period and setting.
