Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry
Answer
Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry
Holy Trinity Church in Headington Quarry hosted C.S. Lewis’s funeral in 1963.
Lewis died at his home, The Kilns, in Headington, Oxford, on 22 November 1963, one week before his 65th birthday. His funeral was held at Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry, where he had worshipped for many years. He was buried in the churchyard there.
The date of Lewis’s death is often remembered because it coincided with the assassination of United States President John F. Kennedy and the death of writer Aldous Huxley. Lewis’s grave is marked with the name C.S. Lewis and the dates 1898–1963. The nearby Kilns later became associated with the C.S. Lewis Foundation. This church should not be confused with St Mary’s Church in Headington, where Lewis’s Christian marriage to Joy Davidman was celebrated in 1957.
