Which Ottoman sultan died at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389?

The story behind the answer

Murad I was the Ottoman sultan who died at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. The battle took place on 15 June 1389, when an Ottoman army faced forces led by the Serbian prince Lazar Hrebeljanović on the Kosovo Field.

Murad’s death is unusual because accounts differ about exactly how and when he was killed. Later Serbian tradition identifies the assassin as Miloš Obilić, but early sources are less consistent about the killer and the circumstances. What is firmly established is that Murad and Prince Lazar both died during the battle.

After Murad’s death, his son Bayezid I took command and secured the succession. Ottoman tradition says Bayezid ordered the killing of his brother Yakub to prevent a rival claim. The battle was devastating for both sides, and although its immediate result was not simple, Serbia was left politically and militarily weakened. Murad’s internal organs were buried near the battlefield, while his body was taken to Bursa.
