Which 1571 naval battle resulted in a decisive defeat for the Ottoman fleet?
Answer
Battle of Lepanto
Answer
Battle of Lepanto
The Battle of Lepanto was the 1571 naval battle that gave the Ottoman fleet a decisive defeat.
Fought on 7 October 1571 in the Gulf of Patras, Lepanto pitted the Ottoman navy against the Holy League, a coalition organized by Pope Pius V and led chiefly by Spain, Venice, and their allies. The Christian fleet was commanded by Don John of Austria, while the Ottoman force sought to maintain its control of the eastern Mediterranean.
More than 450 warships took part, making Lepanto the largest naval battle in the western world since classical antiquity. The Holy League captured or destroyed many Ottoman vessels and freed thousands of galley slaves. It was also the last major European battle fought almost entirely with oared vessels such as galleys and galleasses.
Lepanto was a major symbolic and military victory, but it did not permanently destroy Ottoman sea power. The Ottomans rebuilt their fleet within months and retained control of much of the eastern Mediterranean. Preveza and Djerba were earlier Ottoman victories, not the defeat asked about here.
