Answer
Battle of Mohács
Which battle in 1526 marked the Ottoman conquest of Hungary? The Battle of Mohács. Fought on 29 August 1526, it was a decisive Ottoman victory over the Kingdom of Hungary near Mohács.
Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent commanded the Ottoman army, while King Louis II led the Hungarian forces. The Ottomans had major advantages in numbers, artillery, disciplined troops, and battlefield planning. The Hungarian army’s attack collapsed under Ottoman counterattacks and concentrated gunfire.
King Louis II died while fleeing across difficult, marshy ground, and much of Hungary’s political and military leadership was lost. The defeat ended the Jagiellonian dynasty’s rule in Hungary and triggered a succession crisis, with John Zápolya and Ferdinand of Habsburg claiming the crown.
Mohács did not mean that every part of Hungary was immediately occupied. Instead, it began a long struggle among the Ottoman Empire, the Habsburg monarchy, and the Eastern Hungarian Kingdom. Buda was captured by the Ottomans only in 1541, and Hungary remained divided for generations.
