Alan Sugar founded the computer company Amstrad.
Sugar founded Amstrad in 1968. The name was formed from his initials, Alan Michael Sugar, and the company first operated in consumer electronics before becoming strongly associated with affordable home computers. Amstrad's products included the CPC range, which was launched in the 1980s and became important in the British home-computing market.
Sugar was the lead investor and central business figure on the original British Dragon's Den-style panel, but he is more commonly associated with The Apprentice than with the BBC's regular Dragon's Den cast. This makes the wording important: the question concerns an original Dragon's Den investor, not the programme's later panel history.
Amstrad was acquired by BSkyB in 2007. Sugar's technology background therefore predates his television career by decades. His career also included consumer electronics, property and football, but Amstrad remains the business most directly linked to his public identity.
