Which organization received the Special Tony Award at the 2026 Tony Awards?

The League of Resident Theatres received the Special Tony Award at the 2026 Tony Awards.

The League of Resident Theatres, commonly abbreviated LORT, is a major association of nonprofit professional theatres in the United States. It represents resident theatres and helps provide an organized framework for labor relations and theatrical production across the regional theatre field.

The Special Tony Award is different from the Regional Theatre Tony Award. In 2026, American Players Theatre received the Regional Theatre Tony Award, while LORT received the separate Special Tony Award. The ceremony also honored 1/52 Project and other recipients with Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre.

These distinctions can cause confusion because all three recognitions are noncompetitive or special honors rather than the main competitive production categories. The wording of the award title identifies LORT specifically: it was the organization honored with the Special Tony Award, not the regional-theatre prize.
