Abstergo Industries is the modern-day corporate front for the Templars in Assassin's Creed.

Abstergo presents itself as a vast multinational corporation, but its leadership and operations are connected to the modern Templar Order. The company uses technology, research, and global influence to pursue Templar goals, including control over human behavior and access to Pieces of Eden.

In the original game, Abstergo captures Desmond Miles and places him in the Animus to search his genetic memories. The corporation's public identity helps the Templars operate in contemporary society while concealing their historical conflict with the Assassins.

Abstergo is not the same thing as the Animus. The Animus is the memory-experiencing device, while Abstergo is the organization that develops and uses it. The Assassin Brotherhood is Abstergo's long-standing opposing force, not another name for the corporation.
