Which organization did J.R.R. Tolkien join with C.S. Lewis at Oxford?
Answer
The Inklings
Answer
The Inklings
J.R.R. Tolkien joined C.S. Lewis in the Oxford literary discussion group called The Inklings.
The Inklings were an informal group of writers and scholars associated with the University of Oxford. They met mainly at The Eagle and Child pub, commonly known as the Bird and Baby, and sometimes in college rooms. Members read drafts aloud and discussed literature, religion, language, and imaginative writing.
Tolkien and Lewis became close friends after meeting at Oxford. Lewis encouraged Tolkien’s fiction, while Tolkien’s influence contributed to Lewis’s return to Christian belief. Other participants included Charles Williams, Owen Barfield, and Warren Lewis.
The Inklings were not a formal society with a membership register or published manifesto. That informality distinguishes them from named literary movements such as Bloomsbury. Their importance comes from the sustained intellectual and creative exchange among Oxford writers during the 1930s and 1940s.
