Which organization developed the Animus in the Assassin's Creed series?

The story behind the answer

Abstergo Industries developed the Animus in the Assassin's Creed series.

Within the modern-day storyline, Abstergo is a multinational corporation secretly controlled by the Templars. Its Animus technology allows a person to relive ancestral memories encoded in genetic material. The device gives the Templars a way to search the past for information, artifacts, and locations connected to the Assassins and the Isu.

Desmond Miles is forced to use an early Animus model in the first game. Later Animus versions become more portable and sophisticated, allowing other characters to access historical memories. The technology is fictional, but the series uses it to connect modern science-fiction scenes with historical adventures.

The Assassin Brotherhood does not invent the Animus, although Assassin-aligned characters later use or adapt versions of it. The Templars’ corporate front is Abstergo Industries, while Abstergo Entertainment is a subsidiary presented in later games as a producer of historical entertainment.
