Which Olivier Award did Groundhog Day the musical win in 2017?

The story behind the answer

Which Olivier Award did Groundhog Day the musical win in 2017? It won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

Groundhog Day won Best New Musical at the 2017 Laurence Olivier Awards, which recognize achievement in London theatre. The award followed the show’s successful 2016 world premiere at The Old Vic. The production was nominated in eight Olivier categories and also won Best Actor in a Musical for Andy Karl, who played Phil Connors.

The musical was written by Tim Minchin, with a book by Danny Rubin, based on the 1993 film co-written by Rubin and Harold Ramis. Its score combines comedy, romance and darker reflections on loneliness, repetition and personal change—ideas that made the film’s time-loop premise especially suitable for musical theatre.

The answer is sometimes confused with Best Choreography, because the production received a choreography nomination. It did not win that category. Nor should the Olivier result be confused with the show’s Broadway awards: its New York production was nominated for several 2017 Tony Awards but did not win Best Musical.
