Christopher Tolkien edited and published much of his father’s posthumous Middle-earth writing.

Born in 1924, Christopher Tolkien became the principal editor of J.R.R. Tolkien’s unpublished papers after his father’s death in 1973. He organized drafts, notes, and variant texts into books that expanded the published history of Middle-earth.

His major editorial projects included The Silmarillion, published in 1977, Unfinished Tales, and the twelve-volume History of Middle-earth. These works made many of Tolkien’s legends, manuscripts, and revisions available to readers.

Christopher Tolkien did not simply reproduce a single finished manuscript in every case. He often had to compare different versions and explain editorial decisions, which is why some posthumous books are presented as reconstructed collections rather than conventional novels.
