Which Oceanian country includes the capital atoll of Funafuti?

The story behind the answer

Which Oceanian country includes the capital atoll of Funafuti? The answer is Tuvalu.

Funafuti is the capital atoll of Tuvalu, a Polynesian island country in the central Pacific. It is made up of numerous small islets surrounding a large lagoon, with Fongafale serving as the principal inhabited islet and the location of the national government and most services.

Tuvalu became independent from the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony in 1978, and Funafuti was selected as its administrative center. During World War II, American forces built an airfield there; that runway later became Funafuti International Airport and remains a notable feature of the atoll.

The wording can cause a geographical mix-up: Fongafale is often casually called the capital, and Vaiaku is sometimes used for the government area. Officially, however, the capital is the entire Funafuti atoll. Its low elevation also makes it especially vulnerable to coastal flooding and sea-level rise.
