Which Oceanian country has Pohnpei as the island where its capital Palikir is located?

The story behind the answer

The Federated States of Micronesia has Palikir, its capital, on the island of Pohnpei.

Palikir sits on the northwestern side of Pohnpei, a high volcanic island in the western Pacific. Pohnpei is also one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia, alongside Chuuk, Kosrae, and Yap. The country’s name can therefore cause confusion: Micronesia is both a broad Pacific region and part of the country’s official name.

Palikir was once a small village, but the national government developed it as a purpose-built administrative capital. It was declared the capital in 1989, replacing Kolonia as the seat of the federal government. Kolonia remains Pohnpei’s largest settlement and is located nearby.

Pohnpei is notable for its mountainous, exceptionally wet landscape and fringing coral reefs. Mount Nanlaud, on the island, is the highest point in the Federated States of Micronesia. The country became self-governing in 1979 and maintains a Compact of Free Association with the United States.
