Which Oceanian country has the raggiana bird-of-paradise as its national bird?

The story behind the answer

Papua New Guinea has the raggiana bird-of-paradise as its national bird.

The raggiana bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea raggiana), also called Count Raggi’s bird-of-paradise, is native to southern and northeastern New Guinea. In Papua New Guinea it is known as the kumul, a name also used by the country’s national rugby league team.

The male is famous for its elaborate courtship display. Males gather at display arenas called leks, where they compete for perches and attract females by shaking their heads, clapping their wings, and spreading their ornamental flank plumes. Females are smaller-looking and lack the male’s long tail wires.

The bird became Papua New Guinea’s national emblem in 1971, and it appears on the national flag. It is sometimes confused with other birds-of-paradise found across New Guinea, but the raggiana species is the specific national bird. Despite ceremonial use of its plumes, the species is classified as Least Concern and remains widespread in eastern New Guinea forests.
