Which Oceanian country has Guadalcanal as one of its main islands?

The story behind the answer

Which Oceanian country has Guadalcanal as one of its main islands? The answer is Solomon Islands.

Guadalcanal is the largest island in the Solomon Islands by area and is home to Honiara, the national capital. The island lies in the southwestern Pacific and is known locally as Isatabu. Its rugged interior includes Mount Popomanaseu, the country’s highest point.

The island’s name came from Guadalcanal, a village in Andalusia, Spain. Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña first charted it in 1568, naming it after the birthplace of expedition member Pedro de Ortega Valencia.

Guadalcanal is especially famous for the major World War II campaign fought there from 1942 to 1943. Allied victory halted Japanese expansion in the Pacific. A common mix-up is confusing the island with the wider Solomon Islands archipelago: Guadalcanal is one island within that country, not a separate nation.
