Which Oceanian country has Canberra as its capital city?

The story behind the answer

Which Oceanian country has Canberra as its capital city? The answer is Australia.

Canberra is Australia’s national capital and lies in the Australian Capital Territory, an enclave within New South Wales. It was created as a compromise after rival claims from Sydney and Melbourne; the Constitution required the national capital to be in its own territory rather than in either major city.

The city was formally named Canberra in 1913 and was deliberately planned. American architect Walter Burley Griffin and architect Marion Mahony Griffin designed a geometric layout shaped by the surrounding hills and waterways. Lake Burley Griffin, Parliament House, and the Australian War Memorial are among its best-known landmarks.

Canberra did not immediately replace Melbourne as the federal seat. Parliament moved from Melbourne to the Provisional Parliament House in Canberra in 1927, while the current Parliament House opened on Capital Hill in 1988. A common mistake is choosing Sydney because it is Australia’s largest and internationally best-known city; Sydney is the capital of New South Wales, not the national capital.
