Which ocean liner was launched in 1932 by the French Line?
Answer
SS Normandie
Answer
SS Normandie
SS Normandie was launched in 1932 by the French Line.
The French Line, formally the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, built Normandie at the Penhoët shipyard in Saint-Nazaire. Her launch took place on 29 October 1932, and she entered transatlantic service in 1935.
Normandie became famous for her streamlined appearance, lavish interiors and advanced engineering. She won the Blue Riband for the fastest westbound Atlantic crossing on her maiden voyage and held the record until 1936, when RMS Queen Mary took it.
The liner was laid up in New York during World War II and was later requisitioned by the United States. A conversion accident caused a major fire in 1942, after which the damaged ship was never returned to service. Normandie is distinct from SS France, another famous French Line liner launched decades later.
