Which ocean liner set the fastest transatlantic passenger-ship record in 1952?
Answer
SS United States
Answer
SS United States
SS United States set the fastest transatlantic passenger-ship record in 1952.
On her maiden voyage in July 1952, the American liner crossed from New York to Bishop Rock in 3 days, 10 hours, and 40 minutes. Her average speed was about 35.59 knots, allowing her to capture the Blue Riband from the British liner Queen Mary.
The ship was designed by naval architect William Francis Gibbs and built with national-security considerations in mind. In addition to civilian passengers, her high speed allowed the possibility of rapid troop transport during wartime. Fire-resistant materials were used extensively in her construction.
SS United States remained the holder of the westbound and eastbound records for decades. She was withdrawn from service in 1969 as commercial aviation made long-distance ocean travel less competitive. Although she no longer sails, her record remains a landmark in liner history.
