Which ocean liner sank on its maiden voyage in April 1912?
Answer
RMS Titanic
Answer
RMS Titanic
RMS Titanic sank on its maiden voyage in April 1912.
The British passenger liner struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic shortly before midnight on 14 April 1912 and sank in the early hours of 15 April. It was traveling from Southampton to New York on its first voyage. More than 1,500 people died, making the disaster one of the deadliest peacetime maritime tragedies in history.
Titanic was operated by the White Star Line and built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. It was one of three Olympic-class ocean liners, alongside Olympic and Britannic. Although often described as “unsinkable” in popular culture, that wording was not an official guarantee from the ship’s designers.
The wreck was discovered in 1985 by a joint American-French expedition. RMS Lusitania was a different ocean liner sunk during World War I, while SS Andrea Doria sank in 1956 after a collision.
