Which ocean liner sank after colliding with Stockholm off Nantucket in 1956?

The story behind the answer

SS Andrea Doria sank after colliding with Stockholm off Nantucket in 1956.

The Italian liner was struck by the Swedish-American liner Stockholm in dense fog on 25 July 1956. The collision occurred near Nantucket, Massachusetts, while Andrea Doria was approaching New York at the end of a voyage from Genoa.

Andrea Doria developed a severe list and sank the following morning. Of the 1,134 passengers and 572 crew members aboard, 46 died in the collision and sinking. Stockholm survived and was later repaired, while Andrea Doria remained on the seabed.

The disaster became famous for its complicated navigation and visibility issues. It is sometimes described as a simple head-on collision, but the ships’ courses, radar interpretations and maneuvering decisions were central to later investigations and legal proceedings.
