Which ocean liner collided with the Swedish ship Stockholm in 1956?
Answer
SS Andrea Doria
Answer
SS Andrea Doria
SS Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish ship Stockholm in 1956.
The Italian liner Andrea Doria and Stockholm struck each other off Nantucket, Massachusetts, on 25 July 1956. Andrea Doria was traveling west toward New York, while Stockholm was heading east. Dense fog reduced visibility during the encounter.
Andrea Doria suffered severe damage and eventually capsized and sank the following morning. Stockholm survived because its strongly reinforced bow remained comparatively intact, although the collision caused heavy casualties aboard both vessels. More than 1,600 people were rescued from Andrea Doria before she went down.
The disaster prompted extensive discussion about radar use, speed in fog, navigation procedures, and the interpretation of radar information. Andrea Doria’s wreck remains a challenging deep-water dive site. It is often confused with the sinking of Empress of Ireland, another major passenger-ship disaster, but that occurred in 1914 in the Saint Lawrence River.
