Which ocean liner became the first ship to exceed 1,000 feet in length?

The story behind the answer

RMS Queen Mary became the first ocean liner to exceed 1,000 feet in length.

The Cunard White Star liner measured 1,019 feet and entered service in 1936. It was built by John Brown & Company at Clydebank, Scotland, for the North Atlantic route between Southampton and New York.

Queen Mary was designed during a period of intense competition among British, French and German operators. Its great length supported substantial passenger accommodation, while its powerful engines enabled high speeds suitable for the Atlantic service.

The liner is often confused with Queen Elizabeth, its larger sister ship, which entered service in 1946. Queen Mary also held the Blue Riband briefly in 1936 before SS Normandie reclaimed the record. Since 1967, the retired ship has been permanently moored in Long Beach, California.
