Which ocean has the smallest volume?
Answer
Arctic Ocean
Answer
Arctic Ocean
The Arctic Ocean has the smallest volume of the world’s five recognized oceans.
It is also the smallest by surface area and the shallowest, covering about 14.1 million square kilometers with a volume of roughly 18.07 million cubic kilometers. Eurasia, North America, Greenland, and several Arctic islands surround its mostly enclosed basin. Narrow connections through the Bering Strait and the Greenland Sea link it to the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
A common mix-up is confusing “smallest” with “coldest.” The Arctic is both, but those are separate facts. Its extensive sea ice, shallow continental shelves, and surrounding landmasses help explain why it contains much less water than the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, or Southern oceans. Some oceanographers call it the Arctic Mediterranean Sea or North Polar Sea, but standard geographic classifications recognize it as an ocean.
Its waters also matter far beyond the polar region. Dense water formed around the Arctic contributes to deep-ocean circulation, while seasonal sea ice affects climate, ecosystems, and global heat exchange.
