Which oasis did Alexander visit for an oracle in the Libyan desert?

The story behind the answer

The Siwa Oasis was the desert oasis Alexander the Great visited to consult the oracle of Amun. He made the journey after conquering Egypt in 332 BC, before continuing his campaign against the Persian Empire.

Siwa lies in a deep depression beside the Libyan Desert, in what is now western Egypt near the Libyan border. Its springs and fertile land made it a crucial stopping place across an otherwise harsh desert region. The oasis was home to a celebrated sanctuary of Amun, whom the Greeks identified with Zeus Ammon.

Ancient accounts say the oracle recognized Alexander as the son of the god and as Egypt’s legitimate pharaoh. The exact wording and meaning of the consultation are uncertain because the surviving accounts were written later, but the visit clearly helped Alexander present himself as a ruler accepted by Egyptian religious tradition.

Kharga, Dakhla, and Fayyum were also important Egyptian oases, but none was the famous Libyan Desert destination associated with Alexander’s oracle visit.
