Which Macedonian general was killed by Alexander during a drunken quarrel?
Answer
Cleitus the Black
Answer
Cleitus the Black
Cleitus the Black was the Macedonian general killed by Alexander during a drunken quarrel.
The killing occurred in 328 BC at Maracanda, in Bactria, during a banquet celebrating the festival of Dionysus. Cleitus and Alexander argued after drinking, with the dispute touching on Alexander’s adoption of Persian customs and his claims about surpassing the achievements of his father, Philip II. Cleitus defended the older Macedonian tradition and reminded Alexander that his father’s conquests had made his career possible.
The argument escalated after Cleitus criticized the king. Alexander seized a spear and threw it, fatally striking Cleitus in the chest. Ancient accounts say Alexander immediately regretted the act and became so distraught that he contemplated suicide.
Cleitus was not an obscure court official: he had saved Alexander’s life at the Battle of the Granicus in 334 BC by killing the Persian soldier who attacked him. He is sometimes confused with Philotas or Parmenion, both prominent commanders who were executed in separate political episodes.
