Thomas Alsgaard won the men’s 50-kilometre cross-country race at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics.
Alsgaard won the 50-kilometre classical race on home snow at Lillehammer, defeating Finland’s Mika Myllylä and Italy’s Maurilio De Zolt. The result was one of five Olympic gold medals he collected during his career, including relay victories for Norway.
The 50-kilometre event was traditionally one of the ultimate endurance tests in Olympic cross-country skiing. At Lillehammer, it was held using classical technique, in which skis remain in prepared tracks and the skier uses diagonal stride, double poling, or herringbone steps. Alsgaard’s victory is sometimes attributed to Bjørn Dæhlie because Dæhlie dominated the same Games and won several other gold medals.
