Which Norwegian road is famous for its bridges and tunnels along the Atlantic coast?
Answer
Atlantic Ocean Road
Answer
Atlantic Ocean Road
The Norwegian road famous for its bridges and tunnels along the Atlantic coast is the Atlantic Ocean Road.
Known in Norwegian as Atlanterhavsveien, this 8.3-kilometre section of County Road 64 crosses an archipelago in Møre og Romsdal. It links the village of Kårvåg on Averøya with Vevang on the mainland, using causeways, viaducts and eight bridges. The distinctive Storseisundet Bridge is its best-known landmark.
The route was first considered as a railway alignment, but serious road planning began in the 1970s. Construction started in 1983, and the road opened on 7 July 1989 after enduring 12 European windstorms during construction. Tolls paid for part of the project and were removed in 1999, once construction costs had been recovered.
A common mix-up is confusing the road with the Atlantic Ocean Tunnel. The tunnel, opened in 2009, connects Averøy with Kristiansund and is a separate but related fixed link. The road itself is also a designated Norwegian National Tourist Route and cultural heritage site.
