Which North American country is home to the archaeological site of Teotihuacan?

The story behind the answer

The North American country home to the archaeological site of Teotihuacan is Mexico.

Teotihuacan is located in the Valley of Mexico, in the modern State of Mexico, approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Mexico City. The site preserves the remains of a vast pre-Columbian city known for the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon, the Avenue of the Dead, and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent.

The city began developing around the first century BCE and reached its greatest influence during the first half of the first millennium CE. At its height, it may have housed roughly 100,000 people, making it one of the largest cities in the ancient world. Its trade networks and artistic influence extended across much of Mesoamerica.

A common misconception is that Teotihuacan was built by the Aztecs. The city was already centuries old and largely abandoned when the Mexica encountered its ruins. The Aztecs revered the site and gave it the Nahuatl name often translated as “the place where the gods were created.” UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site in 1987.
