Which Central American country contains Lake Atitlán?
Answer
Guatemala
Answer
Guatemala
The Central American country containing Lake Atitlán is Guatemala.
Lake Atitlán lies in Guatemala’s southwestern highlands, in Sololá Department. It occupies a volcanic basin surrounded by steep slopes and three major volcanoes: Atitlán, Tolimán and San Pedro. With a maximum estimated depth of about 340 metres, it is widely described as the deepest lake in Central America.
The lake formed in a large volcanic caldera after a major eruption roughly 79,500 years ago. Its name comes from Nahuatl: atl means “water,” while titlan means “between,” producing the familiar interpretation “between the waters.” Towns around the shoreline include Panajachel, Santiago Atitlán and San Pedro La Laguna.
Lake Atitlán is also a major cultural and tourism landmark. Many lakeside communities have strong Maya identities, including Kaqchikel and Tz’utujil communities, and the region is known for textiles, agriculture and boat travel. It should not be confused with Lake Amatitlán, another Guatemalan lake near Guatemala City. A distinctive afternoon wind called Xocomil can make the lake’s surface rough and boating hazardous.
