Which Norse goddess is associated with love and beauty?
Answer
Freyja
Answer
Freyja
Freyja is the Norse goddess most strongly associated with love and beauty.
She is a major Vanir deity whose powers extend well beyond romance. Norse sources also connect her with fertility, sexuality, gold, magic, war, and death. Freyja practices seiðr, a form of magic associated with prophecy and influencing events, and she is described as the owner of the famed necklace Brísingamen.
Freyja’s beauty and romantic associations can make her seem like a simple Norse equivalent of Aphrodite, but that comparison is incomplete. She is also a powerful and sometimes martial figure. Her heavenly field, Fólkvangr, receives half of those who die in battle, while Odin receives the other half in Valhalla.
Freyja is often confused with Frigg because both are prominent goddesses and later traditions sometimes blur their roles. The two are distinct figures in the surviving Norse texts, although scholars have debated whether they may share an older Germanic origin. Freyja’s name itself means “lady” or “mistress” in Old Norse.
