Which Nordic country has land borders with Sweden, Norway, and Russia?

The story behind the answer

The Nordic country with land borders with Sweden, Norway, and Russia is Finland.

Finland occupies the northeastern part of the Nordic region. Sweden lies to its west, Norway reaches its northwestern corner, and Russia forms its long eastern boundary. Finland therefore connects the Scandinavian Peninsula’s western countries with the vast Eurasian landmass to the east.

The country’s borders reflect several historical turning points. Sweden ceded Finland to Russia in 1809 after the Finnish War, and Finland became an independent republic in 1917. Its eastern frontier was later altered after the Winter War and the Continuation War, when Finland ceded territory to the Soviet Union.

Finland is often confused with Iceland or Denmark in Nordic-country questions. Iceland has no land borders, while Denmark’s mainland borders only Germany. Finland’s northernmost area also meets Norway and Sweden at the Three-Country Cairn, a tripoint in Lake Koltajärvi.
