Which landlocked country lies between Romania and Ukraine?

The story behind the answer

Moldova is the landlocked country lying between Romania and Ukraine.

Moldova occupies much of the historical region of Bessarabia in Eastern Europe. Romania borders it to the west, while Ukraine surrounds it on the north, east, and south. The Prut River forms most of the Romanian boundary, and the Dniester is one of the region's major geographic features.

Moldova declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Its capital, Chișinău, lies near the center of the country and is its largest city. The narrow eastern strip known as Transnistria has been controlled de facto by a breakaway administration since the early 1990s, although it is internationally recognized as part of Moldova.

Moldova is technically landlocked, but a 1999 territorial exchange gave it a tiny 0.45-kilometer frontage on the Danube at Giurgiulești. That river access leads to international waters, but does not give Moldova a conventional sea coast. Serbia, Belarus, and Slovakia do not fit the stated location.
