Which Nobel Prize in Literature laureate wrote the epic poem Aniara?

The story behind the answer

Harry Martinson wrote the epic poem Aniara, which helped establish his place in Swedish literature.

Published in 1956, Aniara follows a spacecraft carrying people away from an environmentally devastated Earth toward Mars and Venus. After a collision sends the vessel off course, the passengers face an apparently endless journey through space.

The poem combines science fiction with philosophical and existential themes. Martinson examines technological destruction, human loneliness, war, and the search for meaning. Its title refers to the spacecraft Aniara, named from a term associated with wandering or traveling.

Martinson received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1974, sharing it with Eyvind Johnson. Aniara was later adapted into an opera and a Swedish feature film, making it one of the most internationally recognized works by a Swedish Nobel laureate.
