Which Nobel Prize in Literature laureate won in 2000 and was born in China?
Answer
Gao Xingjian
Answer
Gao Xingjian
Gao Xingjian won the 2000 Nobel Prize in Literature and was born in China.
The Swedish Academy praised his work as a universal validity marked by bitter insights and linguistic inventiveness. Gao is a novelist, playwright, poet, translator, critic, and painter. His best-known novels include Soul Mountain and One Man’s Bible, both of which examine memory, individuality, political pressure, and the search for freedom.
Gao was born in Ganzhou, Jiangxi, in 1940 and became a French citizen in 1996. He has lived in France since the late 1980s. He is sometimes confused with Mo Yan, who became the second writer born in China to win the Literature prize, in 2012. Gao’s award therefore marks a distinct earlier milestone.
