Which Nobel Prize in Literature laureate won in 1967, becoming the first Guatemalan recipient?
Answer
Miguel Ángel Asturias
Answer
Miguel Ángel Asturias
Miguel Ángel Asturias won the 1967 Nobel Prize in Literature and became the first Guatemalan recipient.
Asturias was a Guatemalan novelist, poet, diplomat, and translator whose work combined Indigenous cultural traditions with political criticism. The Swedish Academy praised his vivid literary achievement, rooted in the national character and traditions of Indigenous peoples of Latin America.
His best-known novel, El Señor Presidente, is a landmark of Latin American political fiction. It portrays authoritarian power through surreal imagery and helped establish the dictator novel as an important form in Spanish-language literature. Asturias also wrote Men of Maize, which draws on Mayan mythology and conflicts over land and identity.
Asturias is not the same person as Chilean poet Pablo Neruda or Mexican writer Octavio Paz. Neruda won in 1971, while Paz won in 1990. Asturias’s 1967 award came before the major international boom in Latin American fiction.
