Which Nobel Prize in Literature laureate won in 1937 for the novel Les Thibault?

The story behind the answer

Roger Martin du Gard won the 1937 Nobel Prize in Literature for the novel sequence Les Thibault.

The French writer’s multivolume family saga follows two brothers and their social world against the political and cultural tensions of France before and during the First World War. The work’s scale and documentary attention helped establish Martin du Gard as a major novelist of the twentieth century.

He was awarded the prize for the artistic power and truth with which he portrayed human conflict and contemporary life. Les Thibault is sometimes confused with works by André Gide, another French Nobel laureate who won in 1947. Martin du Gard’s award belongs to 1937, between the prizes of Eugene O’Neill in 1936 and Pearl S. Buck in 1938.
