Which Nobel Prize in Literature laureate was the first writer to receive the award in Arabic?

The story behind the answer

Naguib Mahfouz was the first writer working in Arabic to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, winning in 1988.

The Egyptian novelist was honored for works that formed an Arabic narrative art applicable to all humankind. His fiction often portrayed Cairo’s neighborhoods, families, social classes, political tensions, and changing values.

Mahfouz published more than thirty novels, along with short stories, essays, and screenplays. His Cairo Trilogy—Palace Walk, Palace of Desire, and Sugar Street—follows a family through major changes in Egyptian society during the early twentieth century.

Mahfouz’s award was a landmark for Arabic literature in the Nobel’s international history. Orhan Pamuk, who writes in Turkish, won in 2006; Amin Maalouf, who writes in French, won no Nobel Prize in Literature. Mahfouz died in Cairo in 2006.
