Which Nobel Prize in Literature laureate was also Prime Minister of the United Kingdom?
Answer
Winston Churchill
Answer
Winston Churchill
Winston Churchill was a Nobel Prize in Literature laureate who also served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Churchill won the Literature Prize in 1953. The Swedish Academy recognized his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as his brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values. He is the only serving or former British prime minister to receive the Literature Prize.
His major historical works include The Second World War, published in six volumes from 1948 to 1953, and A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, published in four volumes from 1956 to 1958. His political speeches and memoir-like histories helped shape his literary reputation.
Churchill was prime minister twice, from 1940 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1955. The Nobel award recognized his writing and speeches, not a particular novel, and he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
