Which Nintendo Switch model launched on September 20, 2019?

The story behind the answer

The Nintendo Switch Lite launched on September 20, 2019.

Nintendo designed the Switch Lite as a smaller, lighter, handheld-only version of the original Switch. Unlike the standard model, it has built-in controls rather than detachable Joy-Con controllers and cannot connect to a television through a dock. Its integrated controls make the device feel closer to a traditional handheld console.

The Switch Lite supports Switch games that work in handheld mode, while games requiring detached Joy-Con features may need separately purchased controllers. Nintendo released the system in several colours, including yellow, turquoise, gray, and coral. Special editions later used designs based on Pokémon and other Nintendo properties.

The model is often confused with the Nintendo Switch OLED Model, which arrived on October 8, 2021. The OLED Model remains a dockable system with detachable Joy-Con controllers; the Switch Lite is the dedicated portable member of the family.
