Which Nintendo Switch game won The Game Awards’ 2017 Game of the Year?

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild won The Game Awards’ 2017 Game of the Year.

Nintendo released Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch and Wii U on 3 March 2017. The game reimagined the Zelda formula with a large open world, physics-based systems, climbable surfaces, and an emphasis on player choice. Its Switch launch helped establish the new console’s early identity.

At The Game Awards 2017, Breath of the Wild also won Best Game Direction and Best Action/Adventure Game. The Game Awards’ Game of the Year category recognizes the overall game judged strongest across the eligible releases, rather than the best title on one particular platform.

A common mix-up is Super Mario Odyssey, another highly acclaimed 2017 Nintendo Switch release. It won Best Family Game at that ceremony, but Breath of the Wild received the event’s top award. The game later received expansion content through its Expansion Pass.
