Which Nintendo Switch game was the first Mario Party title to support online multiplayer for its main boards?

The story behind the answer

Mario Party Superstars was the first Mario Party title to support online multiplayer for its main boards.

Released for Nintendo Switch in October 2021, Mario Party Superstars includes five boards based on earlier Mario Party games and 100 minigames drawn from the series’ history. Its online mode supports complete board-game sessions, allowing players to compete remotely rather than limiting online play to selected minigame activities.

Super Mario Party, released in 2018, offered online minigame play through a mode called Online Mariothon, but its standard board maps were not initially playable online in the same way. That difference is the source of frequent confusion between the two Switch entries.

Mario Party Superstars also supports local play on one console and online play with Nintendo Switch Online. Its focus on classic boards and minigames distinguishes it from the more experimental Super Mario Party.
